Water Baptisms

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

On March 22, 2012, we will be having a baptismal service instead of out normal Outpost meeting! If you have not been baptized in water, this would be a great time to get baptized!

What is baptism? The following is taken from an article written by Dr. Earl Creps entitled, “Water Baptism and Communion: Two ordinances, three tenses.”

While Jesus himself did not baptize anyone, He immediately delegated this responsibility to His followers (John 4:2) who continued the practice under His direction (Mathew 28:19) as a way of initiating new believers into the faith (Acts 2:41). For 2,000 years followers of Jesus have made three powerful statements in the act of water baptism – one past, one present and one future.

Past tense: I have chosen. At various times in history, misguided Christians have attempted to coerce others into baptism as a way of forcing them into their religion. These campaigns hardly accomplished Jesus’ original mission for the church to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19, NIV). Obviously, being a “disciple” is meant to come first, and that by free choice. An Ethiopian who came to faith by way of Philip’s witness asked him, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” (Acts 8:36).
This is the attitude that baptism represents: a desire to announce that I have chosen to follow Christ. [We] endorse water baptism of those believers who are old enough to understand the experience. Understanding is needed in order to fulfill the biblical emphasis on voluntary choice and saving faith.

Present tense: I can identify. Baptism is a way of telling the world that I identify with Jesus in every respect. When a believer enters the water, he or she is being “buried with [Christ] in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead” (Colossians 2:12). In this sense, every baptism is a funeral for the old self, a way of saying that sin and death no longer own me, “because anyone who has died has been freed from sin” (Romans 6:6,7). But it is much more. The grave could not hold Jesus any more than the water can hold us. At Christ’s return, the grave will be unable to hold us as well (Romans 8:11).
Christ’s death and resurrection are the great universals of the Christian faith, accessible to anyone who believes. Despite some differences in theology and method, all Christian traditions practice water baptism in some form, telling the world that their faith is not a set of beliefs, but a life lived out in Christ. [We] practice water baptism by immersion to reinforce the symbolism of burial and resurrection and to reflect the practice as found in the New Testament.

Future tense: I will be faithful. Scripture records baptisms taking place in public settings. Since church buildings were not used until the third century A.D., the public nature of the ordinance most likely persisted for generations. Thus, to be baptized as a Christian in a largely pagan culture was to make a very public statement of total commitment to Christ, and to face the consequences of that commitment.
Public baptism makes it impossible for Christians to practice a “secret” faith concealed from a possibly hostile world. A baptismal service, especially when accompanied by the new believer’s retelling of his or her spiritual journey, is a powerful witness to the risen Christ and a statement of commitment to the Savior that cannot be retracted. It is a way of saying that I have counted the cost and decided to serve God with all my heart (Luke 14:25-33).
[We] follow the historic Christian practice of baptizing “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). In addition to being Jesus’ only instruction on the matter, this wording reflects the triune God’s total commitment to the believer. The Father’s love sent the Son to the cross. The Father and the Son sent the Spirit upon the church (Matthew 3:11; John 15:26).

If you are interested in being baptized in water at our service on March 22nd – talk to your small group leader! We would love to celebrate with you!

Father Heart of God Intro – By Dick Schroeder

The Father Heart of God

One of the subjects that I enjoy teaching on is The Father Heart of God. First we come to know Jesus as our Savior, rejoicing over the brand-new beginning that his forgiveness brings us. Then, through the Holy Spirit, we come to know and understand the presence and power of God in our lives. No longer is God far away, but through the Spirit, He dwells in our hearts. We enjoy a closeness and intimacy with the Master because His presence is with us. But in order to attain to the full stature that belongs to us as “Sons of God” we must have a revelation of how much the Father loves us. We can only properly function as a son if we know the Father.

John proclaims the divine offer this way: “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God–children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12-13) We’ve been given the right to become sons, younger brothers of Jesus all serving the same Father, reflecting His eternal glory to a lost and dying planet. That is what this seminar on The Father Heart of God is all about.

I received this letter from a student who attended a retreat where this teaching was given. Here is what he wrote:

Thank you so much for your ministry on the Father’s love at the retreat. God did a great deal of healing in my life. For years I have been subject to feelings of rejection and some resulting shyness of getting into relationships with others. But that has changed. I forgave many people that I’ve held resentment toward and now, to my knowledge, hold nothing against anyone. I feel very free! As you suggested, I pray prayers of blessing on those who have hurt me and what a difference that makes.
I’m glad that you mentioned that healing is a process, and not a one time event. Along the road to healing, a couple of times I got hit pretty hard with thoughts of condemnation. What helped me was refocusing again on Father’s love, and I was lifted out of the depression.
The results of my healing seem to be a bit contagious. My parents are listening to tapes on healing and God is working on them. Some of my friends want to listen to your tapes, and doors keep opening for me to pray for others.
I just want to thank you for the help you extended to me and I pray you will be blessed. The Lord is good!
Your younger brother in Christ,
Dan

TWO REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND THIS SEMINAR

WOUNDED PEOPLE HURT OTHERS
First, broken-hearted people end up hurting others, especially those close to you, such as your parents, spouse, and children. If you have a clear grasp of the love of the Father, you will be secure in that love. Failure to experience his love in an ongoing way will leave you intimidated and competitive in all of your relationships. You will bring pain and heartache to those around you instead of healing and blessing. Hurting people hurt others, whole people heal others.

WOUNDED PEOPLE TEND TO CHOOSE MARRIAGE PARTNERS WHO CONTINUE TO HURT THEM

Second, your choice of a marriage partner, whether they will benefit you or hurt you, depends on how much you let the Father heal you. Hurting people are attracted to others who will perpetuate the pattern of pain. After marriage, the familiar patterns of hurt and pain can continue. The good news is that Jesus can change the patterns and heal our pain! Ben heard this teaching five years ago. Although he forgave others and was touched by the Father, he was skeptical about the idea that the same patterns that he disliked in his father would be present in his own life. While talking to his brother several years later, he realized how much he acted like his father in romantic relationships. That understanding has helped him become more aware of his deficiencies and HELPED him work toward maturity and wholeness.

The Father desires to heal all places of brokenness in our lives so that love will flow from our hearts, rather than resentment and bitterness. In Luke 4:18 Jesus defined his ministry as one coming to “bind up the brokenhearted.” Jesus does not come to condemn, but to bring wholeness and healing to the wounds that we all have experienced.
